Waiting for the Day

It must be close to 3 or 4 it was dark when I left Baltimore
Endless days sleepless nights passing lanes and high beam lights
Waiting for the day to break got to keep myself awake
Since I hit these hills an hour ago can't keep nothing on the radio

Then an all night AM station from somewhere in Virginia
Played a country song so sad that I almost lost the wheel
It was raining hard and I didn't catch the name of who was singing
But I'm sure he must have known just how I feel

Yeah, I heard him sing about drinking wine then I topped a hill and I missed a line
I caught the last words, jealous love then he rhymed it with the Lord above
It was another damn lonesome song about cheating wives and right and wrong

A broken heart a big 10-4 an empty glass, she slammed the door
Lord he sang of home and hope and luck how he loved a girl, how he drove a truck
The steel guitar was weeping like lost children, are you sleeping, girl

CHORUS:

It's 40 more miles to the Carolina border
I promise I will call you when I reach Tennessee
It's 40 more miles to the Carolina border
I promise I will call you when I reach Tennessee

Then a downhill diesel with a heavy load nearly blew me off the road
Gas food and lodging 16 miles the nightshift waitress she never smiles
Over easy please with grits and ham, cream and sugar thank you ma'am
Wedding bands and high school friends turn to coffee cups and lonely men

Oh who's in all these cars out on this interstate highway
They're the traveling kind no it's peace of mind they're probably just like you and me

CHORUS
